There are several theories of juvenile delinquency that explain the causes behind delinquent and criminal behavior. These theories go into depth about why the delinquent is acting out or behaving in such an unpleasant way. The theories also discuss where the behavior stems from whether it’s family, social or psychological circumstances. The four main categories of juvenile delinquency theories include Biological, Anomie, Psychological, or Sociological. Topic: DISCRETION Paper details: Discretion is an essential part of criminal justice. Officials from all areas- police, judges, district attorneys, and everyone else- make decisions based upon experience and informed judgment. Probation officers must use discretion when deciding how to handle probationers’ missteps- when to give warnings, when to formally sanction, and when to suggest revocation. On the other side of the equation, it is very difficult to live and function in a situation in which the rules are arbitrary. If you are constantly getting mixed messages, are unaware of what is expected of you, and are held to standards in an unpredictable manner, it will be very difficult for you to get anything done. Without knowing exactly what the rules and standards are, it’s very difficult to know how to act. If you were a probation officer, how would you balance discretion and arbitrariness? Can you think of any general or guiding principles to help you walk this fine line? Have you had any previous experience (maybe as a supervisor, teacher, or parent) that might help you walk that line?

As stated multiple times in this class, history is rarely static. It is constantly changing based on perception, context, and sources. What happened at the end of World War II is no exception. The way people evaluate the decision to drop the bomb changes based on which historical sources are used and their own personal background. For this assignment, you will be forced to put aside their own feelings about the atomic bomb and do the work of an historian that is, recreate different perceptions of the past using the sources they are given. Complete the three tasks below: 1. Using only the five documents and nothing else, write a paragraph below in which you defend the following: The U.S. was right to drop the atomic bomb. You must include quotations from at least two of the primary source documents (20 points) 2. Using only the five documents and nothing else, write a paragraph below in which you defend the following: The U.S. should never have dropped the atomic bomb. You must include quotations from at least two primary source documents (20 points) 3. Both sides of the argument make valid cases. Is there a way in which both sides can be right? Explain in a paragraph below. (20 points)
